Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Psalms 10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

Is God in all your thoughts? He wants to be. The Lord God desires to be a relevant part of your life on a continual basis. Compartmentalization of our thoughts and activities is an important function of the human brain. While at work thoughts need not to be on how to be a better husband or wife. While with your spouse, thoughts about work should be set aside. This keeps us sane, in the moment, and shows respect to the task at hand. However, God is not to be put into a compartment; He is to be the guiding light that crosses over all aspects of a person’s life.

The Psalmist could have just as easily left the word all out; indicating that God is not in the thoughts of the wicked at all, but the Holy Ghost inspired the writer to indicate that God is …not in all his thoughts. The mind, Word, and will of God are like a filter through which all that enters into the mind should be refined. Through reading His Word, meditating on Him, singing hymns, songs and spiritual hymns, preaching about Him, teaching about Him, and considering Him in all decisions and prayer God can be ever present in all thoughts.

Some years ago, the “What Would Jesus Do” phenomena was in full bloom. While that is a very good question that would be a good mantra for every Christian to live by, it seemed that it was just a motto that did not affect the actions of many. The book In His Steps written by Charles Sheldon in 1897. That book is every bit as relevant today as it was when first written. If memory serves correctly the main character of the book vows to only do that which Jesus would do in every situation for a year. Do yourself a favor; read this book for it will search your soul. Having God in all your thoughts will affect all your actions.

Is He the overriding filter through which all your thoughts (thereby actions) pass?

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.

Dr. William Howe
