Minding Your Thoughts
A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life
Job 4:13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
Who can truly understand the thoughts that invade our mind in the night? Needless to say, we have dreams. Some are tragic, some adventurous, some filled with danger, some surreal. Eliphaz is telling Job of a dream he had, a dream that is as confusing as it is macabre. The content of his dream is not important for this devotion, but the fact that we have thoughts in the night that come to us as visions is.
Who can control their dream life? There are dreams that we wish would never end, and then there are dreams that we wish we never had. The fact that we dream means that our thoughts are always active. Even when we are asleep we still have thoughts. Have you ever actually considered the complexity and details of your dreams? All that takes place in a dream is a figment of your imagination. Your thoughts bring forth real life situations like a movie, but you are in it. You may be a key player in the unfolding drama of your dream, or just a bystander, but your mind puts you in the action.
The people you see, the background, everything is designed and perfectly fit together by your subconscious thoughts. Your mind is awesome to do all of that. If one could harness the power of thought that goes into their dreams and access that power during their waking hours, just imagine the possibilities.
Dreams can be a blessing or a curse. The one thought that I would leave you with today is to be careful that your dreams are not confused with your reality. Eliphaz was doing just that, he was bringing that which he saw in a dream into trying to explain Job’s situation. But he was wrong. All Job’s friends were wrong and God was displeased with them (Job 32:3).
Your mind is fathomless; experts tell us that we use a very small percentage of the mind’s capacity. Sometimes, especially in my life, the greatest activity of my mind takes place when I’m asleep. How sad.
May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
