Minding Your Thoughts
A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life
2 Corinthians 1:17 When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?
The Apostle Paul is writing to the church at Corinth about his mindedness to visit them again. The second part of this verse describes conflict that arises in the minds of many. On a singular issue there may be a part that says “Yea,” and a part that says “Nay.” Paul states that this was not his issue, for he was not of a double mind or a doubtful mind, it was not Yea, Yea, and Nay, Nay. His mind was Yea. His mind was settled; he wanted to see them again.
In a wonderful manner Paul expands a little about this Yea Yea, Nay Nay business. He does so to lead the reader to verses 19 and 20. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. In God through Christ can only be found Yea. His mind is settled.
From the foundation of the earth God has been single minded. The unfolding story of the redemption of sinful man through Jesus is a resounding Yea. The teachings of the Word of God were not, are not, a work in progress. They were established in the mind of God from before the days of Creation. He is not of a double mind, or a doubtful mind, He is of the mindset of Yea, Yea. All of the Lord’s promises are fixed on the surest foundation possible, the mind of God. For that mind can neither lie, forget, nor overlook. It is fixed.
In a day and age in which most leaders suffer with a yea, yea, nay, nay, mindset it is comforting to know that the One who created all things is Yea, Yea all the time. His promises are sure. Human minds may change, be altered, or swayed by events, but Almighty God is not likened unto common man. He is God. He is fixed. He is all knowing, all powerful, and always present. Paul tried to be like Him, and in our highest pursuits we too can strive to be like Him. One area in this pursuit of being more like Him that we must settle is our mindset, let it be Yea, Yea, not Yea, Yea and Nay, Nay. To this end remember what James wrote, A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. (James 1:8)
May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
