Daily Reading: Zechariah 1-7
Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.
Word for word, verse for verse, there is no other book in the Old Testament that contains more Messianic prophecies than Zechariah. In chapter 3:8 the reader is introduced to the Branch. This is Jesus Christ. Joshua was His foreshadow in His role as priest, just as David was His forerunner as King. In chapter 6:12 this Branch is mentioned again. And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD. Jeremiah first mentioned the Branch over one hundred years earlier. Jeremiah 33:15 states: In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
Isaiah said of this Branch: For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. Isaiah 53:2 As the Branch, Jesus is the source of all spiritual fruit. He is the source of all life-giving necessities. He is the Servant of God the Father and all His children. He is the builder; grower, and sustainer of all who abide in Him. In the name of Branch, Jeremiah and Zechariah come together to present Christ in His dual office as King (David), and Priest (Joshua).
But just wait…tomorrow, Zechariah’s clear prophecies of the Messiah will knock your proverbial socks off!
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
