Daily Reading: Habakkuk 1-3, Zephaniah 1-3

Habakkuk 2:4

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

Habakkuk was a prophet, but he was also a nationalistic Jew. His book relays his desire to understand God’s pronouncement of Israel’s destruction at the hands of a nation, the Chaldeans, that was in all accounts more wicked than they were. In the last chapter of the book there is a vision of Israel’s glorious future during the coming of the Lord.

In chapter two, for the first time in Scripture we read that…the just shall live by his faith. Three times this same sentiment is quoted in the New Testament. Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, and Hebrews 10:38.

Zephaniah 2:3

Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD'S anger.

Zephaniah was a contemporary of Habakkuk. In just a few years the nation would be carried away into captivity. In his message a small four-word phrase is used once. Seek ye the LORD. Contrast that with this fact: the impending day of the wrath for Judah which was routinely called “The day of the Lord” is used 11 times.

While Zephaniah’s message was one of doom, the gleam of hope is found in seeking the Lord. Jeremiah (which by the way is also a contemporary of Habakkuk and Zephaniah) said: And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13) In Matthew 7:7 Jesus said: Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

Seeking the Lord as a lifelong pursuit is a worthy activity which yields a great harvest of blessings both physical and spiritual.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
