Daily Reading: Amos 6-9

Amos 8:11

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:

A famine of hearing the words of the Lord. It happened in Israel, it happened between the testaments, and in my estimation, it is happening today and will increase in severity until the end of this age. The Lord will give that which people want. This rejection of the Lord and His Word can be noticed throughout the entire Bible, especially in the New Testament. Consider the illustration that the Lord used in Luke 19. When discussing the nobleman and his kingdom the Lord said this: But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

The Lord is a perfect gentleman, He never intrudes wherein He is not welcome. His Word, the preaching of it, the teaching of it, the living of it, is and will continue to be diminished prior to His return. On this the Bible is clear.

It is one thing to have a famine of bread or water, but of the Word of God! Where will a person go for comfort in times of heartache, confidence in time of confusion, leadership in times of uncertainty, and especially the question the Philippian jailer posed to Paul …what must I do to be saved (Acts 16:30). The famine of hearing the words of God is growing even before our very eyes. Notice the famine is not that there is no Word of God, but rather in hearing the Words of God.

How sad would it be, will it be, was it, for a person to desire to hear the words of the Lord only to have a famine of hearing the words of the Lord to be real and in earnest. How sad it was (400 years between the old and new testaments) and how sad it will be.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today. e for
