Daily Reading: Ezekiel 13-15
Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.
Israel and Judah were so far gone that three of the greatest men found in the nation’s history could not deliver them from God’s wrath. Of Noah, God’s Word confirms that he was a just man and perfect in his generations, and that he walked with God (Genesis 6:9). Of Daniel the Bible relates that he had an excellent spirit, knowledge and understanding (Daniel 5:12). Then of Job three times the Word of God quotes the Lord as saying that he was perfect and upright (Job 1:1, 1:8, 2:3). Yet, these three men of impeccable character could not deliver Israel from the hardships they endured. Of this truth, notice two quick facts.
Daniel was contemporary with Ezekiel. Those Israelites in captivity may have read about Noah and Job, but they could have seen with their own eyes Daniel. They knew quite well of his fidelity to the Lord. This must have had a great impact on them. After all, Daniel was in exile just like them, yet he was faithful. He was a real-life example of a faithful believer in the Lord God.
Also, note this. These men could deliver somebody, just not everybody. Who could they deliver? Only their own souls. In verses 18, and 20 in this chapter it is stated that they could not even deliver their own sons or daughters. They could only deliver their own souls.
Herein is the conclusion. Just as a boat cannot sail on yesterday’s wind, neither can a nation, an individual, or even a family member be delivered from the consequences of personal sin by anyone else. Only they can deliver themselves. Solomon said: Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. How? The Gospel of Jesus Christ. For He can deliver you, but you must come to Him for deliverance. For He is not only a man, but also the Sacrifice and the Savior. A father cannot accept Jesus Christ for his wife, children, or grandchildren. This they must do on their own. They must deliver themselves by faith. Additionally, there are many faithful individuals in the world today. Study their lives and attempt to emulate their character. They cannot deliver you, but they can be great examples of what it means to be delivered.
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
