Daily Reading: Hosea 1-7

Hosea 4:6

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Today our reading through the Bible brings us to the last section of the Old Testament, known as “The Minor Prophets.” Hosea is the first of twelve prophets whose message to Israel and Judah are included in the canon of Scripture. In general, his message contains four themes: judgment, captivity, mercy, and restoration. Hosea may be a short book, but it is huge in its scope and descriptiveness. God’s continued love for an adulterous Israel and His repeated call for them to return to Him is seen throughout.

In today’s verse, the cause of the nation’s destruction is plainly stated: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…. There are two basic reasons why individuals of all times of history and present have a lack of knowledge.

One reason is the unfaithfulness of God’s priests and preachers to distribute the knowledge of God. In chapter six verse nine the company of priests are said to have committed murder and lewdness…in the way by consent. In other words, they failed to warn the nation about these awful sins, turning a blind eye to them; so to speak. It is a sad commentary on the people of God when their spiritual leaders fail to give them knowledge of the Holy, and warnings about the profane (Ezekiel 44:23).

The second basic reason for lack of knowledge is that God’s people reject the knowledge that faithful priests, and preachers impart unto them. They hear the knowledge of God yet reject it. A New Testament commentary on this reality is found in II Timothy 4:3-4. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Whatever the reason, it’s not good! The results are horrible. This is the overall lesson of the book of Hosea.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
