Daily Reading: Daniel 10-12
And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
The feeling of failure is a feeling not soon forgotten. As I write these words, memories of past failures flood my mind. For each I am sorry, for each I am ashamed, for each I cringe. I could have been a better husband, I should have been a better father, I ought to have been a better person. But no doubt, as sure as past failures are past, future failures will come. Try as I might, sorrow abides the living due to decisions made in haste or foreshadow of thought. But…..
But Christ. He has made the difference, He has forgiven me, He has bound me up, healing my wounds, comforting my sorrows, and leading me rightly. Yes, it is one thing to fail in this life but the most awful situation I can imagine is waking up in the next life having failed in the one thing that is frankly the only thing. That is, what did I do with Christ?
You see, in today’s verse the reader of the Bible is reminded about the eternal consequences of decisions made in this life. On one hand there are those who will awake to everlasting life, and there are those who will awake to shame and everlasting contempt. According to the totality of the Scriptures the difference between the two is this: what did they do with Christ?
Did they accept Him by faith? Did they use Him as a toy? Did they give Him lip service while their heart was far from Him? Did they reject Him? In this life it may be difficult to tell the difference between these two groups, but in eternity the difference will be stark and eternally settled.
Yes, some will awake to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt. The difference? What did they do with Christ?
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
