Daily Reading: Daniel 7-9

Daniel 7:1

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters.

The book of Daniel contains prophecies with which the greatest Biblical scholars still have difficulty. There is no way to be dogmatic about what they tell us. Many have taken it into their own hands to do just that, but alas they do so at their own peril. Daniel himself did not understand all that he saw, he was troubled, his countenance changed, he was sick certain days, and astonished at the visions (7:28 & 8:27). Even with Gabriel’s help Daniel could not fully understand all that he wanted to understand.

Consider this list of Daniel’s prophecies:

  • The four kingdoms and then God’s Everlasting Kingdom - chapter 2

  • Nebuchadnezzar’s insanity and recovery - chapter 4

  • Fall of Babylon and rise of the Persian empire - chapter 5

  • Greek empire and its four horns - chapter 8

  • The vision of the seventy weeks leading up to Messiah - chapter 9

  • Troubles of the Holy Land - chapter 11

  • Signs of the time of the end - chapter 12

Because of these prophecies, the book of Daniel is a key to the book of Revelation and all other New Testament prophecies of the end time. Some believe his revelations are purely literal, some figurative, some symbolical, and others see a mixture of all three in these visions. One thing that can be known for certain. All that God gave to Daniel through divine revelation will come to pass. While none can understand it all now, when it happened, or when it will happen, all will know that the Lord told us before it ever happened.

It is very much like the prophecies of Christ, His birth, His life, His death, His burial, and His resurrection; none could really understand these prophecies until they were fulfilled. Some believed in Him during His life because they knew the prophecies of Him and believed them; and Him. Others did not. Likewise, the end time events recorded by Daniel, and John also, cannot be fully understood until they are, or are being, fulfilled.

Concerning prophecy, heed the warning the Lord gives in the last chapter of the Bible. Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Read the prophecies yes, look for them to be fulfilled yes, but twist to fit a certain mindset or scenario, no. A thousand times no.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
