Daily Reading: Ezekiel 43-45

Ezekiel 44:23

And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.

Profane is not a word that is used very often today. To understand all that the word means consider the word profanity. Profane is the root word of that word. In today’s verse the word profane is used and the word unclean is also used. Basically, profane speaks of carnal or worldly practices being brought into the temple. Unclean speaks of an individual’s lack of morality. What is Holy? That which the Word of God proclaims to be Holy. What is clean? That which the Word of God proclaims to be moral.

The priests in the Old Testament and pastors today are to teach God’s people the difference between that which is Holy and that which is profane. Between that which is clean and that which is unclean. Yet, who wants to learn that? Few indeed. The itching ears spoken of by Paul that are to be prominent in the last days are not itching for knowing the difference between the profane and unclean. They are itching for some kind of lesson, a non-challenging message, a message that never condemns nor convicts. Israel wanted the same thing, and many priests were glad to oblige.

Once in a while every person needs that interlude with the Lord God where they are taught the difference between things holy and profane, things clean and unclean. If you have a pastor who is willing to lose your attendance in church to teach you the difference; thank God for him every day. In his letter to the believers in Galatia, Paul wrote this: Am I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth. (Galatians 4:16). Unfortunately, this is too often the result. However, praise the Lord, there are still some that love to hear the story. Love to be corrected. After all, who wants to go around being wrong all the time? If I have a flaw in my attire, I would rather my wife tell me before I leave the house. That way I can take care of it in private before it becomes a public embarrassment (like a striped shirt and a plaid jacket). Likewise the preacher who instructs in the difference between the holy and profane, the clean and the unclean.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
