Daily Reading: Matthew 18-19

Matthew 18:33

Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

Jesus tells the story. One man owed his king 10,000 talents (a talent is a measure, about 130 lbs.). Consider even 100 lbs. of silver or gold times 10,000. This is an overwhelming sum that some calculate in the 15 million to 30-million-dollar range. Another man owed the first man 100 pence which is commonly called a penny which was a day’s labor in the New Testament. So, get the picture, one man owed a little over three months’ worth of labor, another owed millions of days’ worth of labor to repay his debt.

The man who owed the great sum was forgiven by his king, just by asking. What a wonderful thing that was! He owed more than he could ever pay yet was simply forgiven. How happy he must have been and how wonderful his king was to him.

The man who owed the first man also asked for his debt to be forgiven. But the first man would not. He cast the second man into prison until the debt could be paid.

Enter the fellow servants. They saw all this and reported it back to the king. The king then was angry with the first man and called him into his presence. He told the first man that he should have forgiven the second man as the king had forgiven him. Then the king delivered the first man to the tormentors until the debt could be paid, which was impossible even throughout a lifetime for it was a great debt.

Lesson: forgive others as your King has forgiven you. When a person comes to the Lord for forgiveness, He always grants such. How then, is it in any way right for those who have been forgiven a lifetime of sins to not forgive someone who sins against them; even up to 70 x 7 times?

This is a significant teaching of the Lord, one that must be read and reread. Forgiveness is a grace. It is not earned; it can only be granted. Praise the Lord for verses like Ephesians 1:7: In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Amazing grace how sweet the sound…. Right? Right!

Then let everyone who has been forgiven forgive.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
