Daily Reading: Matthew 11-12

Matthew 11:28

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Most believers in Christ are not at rest. At least not physically. Those that love their Savior and desire to be used of Him for His glory are like candles. Yes, candles are of no practical value unless they are consuming themselves in the task for which they were made. Likewise, believers in Christ. We may not be tired of the task, but we sure do get tired in the task.

In today’s verse the Lord cannot possibly be speaking purely of physical rest, and He’s not. In fact, the next verse proves this. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. The Lord gives the soul rest. Rest is a wonderful thing, is it not? Who else, what else, promises to give your soul rest?

The recliner can give the body rest. A warm bath can give the muscles rest. A good night’s sleep can give the mind and body rest. Soft music and calm waters may give the spirit rest. But the soul? Only the Lord can make a soul be at rest. Sometimes believers in Christ aggravate those who have not their faith with their restful souls. “Come let us do this or do that or do the other to find a rest for our souls” they seem to say. “Come let us believe this, hear that, or join a movement of some sort to find rest for our souls.” Yet, the child of God needs none of these, for their soul is at rest. Some will climb the highest mountain to find themselves so their soul can be at rest, the problem with this is…they didn’t lose themselves on the highest mountain. A soul that is not at rest is not at rest anywhere, under any condition, or with the aid of any substance.

A soul, the eternal soul of a man or woman can only be at rest if the Lord God gives them rest. The good news is, He will! He promised to give rest to any and all who Come unto me…

If your soul is not at rest, come to Jesus, He will give your soul rest. Busy in His work we may be, giving ourselves to glorify Him and let our light shine for Him we may, but all the while enjoying a rest in our soul. The type of rest that only He can give.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
