Daily Reading: Matthew 9-10
But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
Yes, Jesus bursts on the scene. His birth, His lineage, His sermon on the mount; and don’t forget…His miracles. That is all they can be called. Miracles. Never before in human history have such miracles been performed by one man. Moses performed some, Elijah performed some, Elisha performed some, but not to the degree and number that Jesus did. Not even close.
After four hundred years of religious drought in the land, Jesus arrives. He stirred it all up; miracle after miracle, after miracle; there was no stopping His power and love. For example, in Matthew 8 & 9 alone, the Lord performed 11 unbelievable miracles. Here is a list:
Healed a leper, 8:1-4
Healed the centurion’s servant of the palsy, 8:5-13
Healed Peter’s mother-in-law, 8:14-15
Cast out many demons, 8:16
Controlled the wind and the sea by voice command, 8:23-27
Cast out a legion of demons from two men and answered the demon’s prayer, 8:28-34
Healed the palsied man and forgave his sins, 9:1-8
Healed the woman with the issue of blood, 9:20-22
Raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead, 9:23-25
Gave two blind men their sight by simply touching their eyes, 9:27-30
Cast out the demon so the dumb man could speak, 9:32-33
As far as an introduction to the world, and every reader of the New Testament, this is a powerful way for the story of Jesus Christ to begin. Yet, notice today’s verse. But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men. This was after Jesus healed the man of the palsy through forgiveness of his sins. The multitude marveled at this because the power of God that was given to the man healed him. Don’t miss this. Jesus was, and is, all powerful, but He has given this power to men. In Matthew 28:18-19 the Lord said to his disciples; All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach… The power of God, given to Jesus, is given to individuals. For it is the power of God, through Christ, that allowed the lame to walk, the blind to see, the dead to rise, and the disciples to preach and teach. The power of God in them, working in them.
Everything a child of God through Christ accomplishes is because of the power of God in and through them. Unfortunately, often, this power is underutilized because of ignorance, lack of faith, or both.
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
