Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Romans 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

I was having a bit of a disagreement with my boss. It was not heated, or argumentative, it was just a difference of opinion on how we should handle a certain problem with one of our customers. This was when my boss told me the following story.

He was having a disagreement with the big boss of our organization. When I say “big boss,” this was the biggest of the big bosses, he was the owner of the corporation. They were debating about a problem and it became a little heated. The “big boss” suddenly jumped out of his chair began moving briskly toward the door of his opulent office, stopped, turned, and motioned for my boss to follow him. Without saying a word the “big boss” led him through the offices, to the lobby, waited for an elevator, took the elevator down to the ground level, walked out of the building, across the parking lot, across the busy road, into the parking lot across the street, all without saying a word.

He then turned around and looked back at the building they just left and asked my boss this question:  “Whose name is on that building?”  My boss replied, “Your name.”  The big boss then said, “When your name is on the building, you can make the decisions.”  End of disagreement. Then my boss told me, “When you are the manager, you can make the decisions.”  That ended our debate.

You see, each person has a mind filled with thoughts that sometimes accuse and sometimes excuse themselves. I may have a thought that accuses me and at the same time another may have the same thought that excuses them. Consider the above story. The “big boss” held to the thought that he owned the business and he could do what he wanted, his thoughts excused him. My boss also held the thought that the “big boss” owned the business so he could do what he wanted, this thought accused him. Same thought held by two men, in one it excused him; in the other it accused him.

I understood that my manager had the final say in how to handle our situation; this thought accused me when it was pointed out so clearly through the story he told me about the “big boss.”   He also had the same thought about him being the manager which excused him.

Many people may have the same thought, but that thought will perform different tasks. For example, the phrase “Jesus Christ was God in the flesh” to those who hold this thought to be true it excuses them (or gives them freedom). For those who do not believe that statement, it accuses them (or gives reason for objection). Understanding this axiom of life brings much wisdom to those who embrace it.

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.

Dr. William Howe
