Daily Reading: Luke 6-7
When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
A centurion, a commanding officer in the Roman army, sent the elders of the Jews to Jesus to ask the Lord to heal one of his beloved servants. The elders of the Jews commended this unnamed centurion as being worthy of the Lord’s attention. After all, this centurion built the synagogue in Capernaum. As, in other cases, the Lord was all too happy to go to the man’s house as requested.
Before Jesus reached the soldier’s house, some of the man’s servants intercepted the Lord relaying a message from the centurion. They said: Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. The man goes on further to speak about authority saying: For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
It was after this message from the centurion when the Lord said of him; I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. The so great faith was based upon the centurion’s belief that all Jesus had to do was give the command which would result in activity within the unseen celestial world and his servant would be healed. Just that simple. Jesus commands it, and it will be done. That is faith in prayer which led Jesus to say that the centurion had a so great faith, more faith than anyone in Israel.
In Mark 11:24 Jesus said, Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. The story of the centurion is an illustration of that verse in action. Just ask the Lord for that which you desire, believe that He can simply speak the word and it will be done. That is, if that which is requested is within the purview of the Lord’s will in the matter.
You can have a so great faith today. Just ask in prayer believing Jesus can command it and it will be done, whatever it is.
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
