Minding Your Thoughts
A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life
Luke 24:38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
I’ll tell you why! Because they were in the presence of someone who died and was buried three days ago! Jesus is now alive and speaking with them. If this happened today, we would have some thoughts arise in our hearts too.
From time-to-time thoughts arise in our hearts that we can do nothing about. Thoughts of fear, uncertainty, doubt, worry, and even sinful thoughts. It may be impossible to stop them from arising, but when they do something can be done about it.
In the verses following today’s verse the Lord gives those to whom He is speaking additional information in the way of proof that He stood before them in His resurrected body. He showed them His hands and feet, He invited them to touch Him, and then He ate some fish and a piece of honeycomb. This may give us a divine way to overcome those unwanted thoughts that arise in our hearts.
Drive them away with truth. Quote Scripture, rehearse past victories that the Lord has granted unto you, remember messages or lessons that deal with the problematic thoughts, and sing. Sing hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs. Praise the Lord verbally, thank Him for all His wonderful works, and pray asking for help with the troublesome thoughts.
Above all, deal with truth and minimize conjecture of the unknown. Let me leave you with a quote of some unknown wise person: “Worry is interest paid on a debt that is not yours.” When unwelcome thoughts arise in your heart, flee to the truth.
May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
