Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Luke 2:35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

There is an Old Testament story, found in II Kings 6 that wonderfully illustrates the truth in today’s verse that ….the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. God not only knows that which we say and do, He knows the very thoughts of the heart. Consider…

Jehoram, the son of Ahab, was king of Israel. Benhadad was king of Syria. Elisha was the prophet of God. The king of Syria was at war with Israel. As with any great military leader, Benhadad had put together a war strategy that would capture Israel by surprise and perhaps end the war in victory for the Syrians. An integral part of this military strategy was the secret location of the camp of the Syrians. Under the cover of clouds, the warriors of Syria moved into position to attack the Israelites by surprise.

However, God told the prophet, Elisha, about Syria’s plans and the location of their secret camp. The man of God told Jehoram, king of Israel, not to pass by such a place for the Syrians had come down to that place for a surprise attack. The Bible says that the king of Israel heeded Elisha’s counsel and won a great victory there, not once or twice, but at least three times the army of the king of Israel trounced the forces of the Syrians.

The heart of the King of Syria, Benhadad, was hot. He must have thought that someone in his army was a spy, a double agent, or a traitor. Benhadad called together his top counselors and leaders’ demanding to know which one was for the king of Israel. To this inquiry one of Benhadad’s servants told him, …None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber. (II Kings 6:12)

This story, straight from the pages of the Word of God, proves today’s verse. Through God in Heaven, …the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. Nothing escapes God’s purview, He knows it all, and when needed He reveals the secrets of men to His servants.

Note: To fully appreciate today’s verse, please read Luke 2:25 – 35. This passage relates the prophecy of Simeon regarding Christ as given to Mary and Joseph when they brought the baby Jesus to the Temple for dedication.

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
