Daily Reading: Mark 14
And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
At that which is commonly called “The Last Supper”, Jesus proclaimed that one of the disciples would betray Him. To a man, they all asked, Is it I? These are the men who walked with the Lord, saw His work, marveled at His power, and rejoiced in His day. Yet, they all were honest enough to doubt themselves.
As much as one may state declaratively that they would never deny the Savior. Learn a lesson from these men. Each one was concerned that they may be the one who would betray Him. In the famous poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling there is a wonderful statement that each person should consider. “If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too;.” This is where an honest person will live. Trust yourself but maintain an allowance that as a human there is cause to doubt oneself.
Within the next few hours every man at this “supper” would forsake Him. Mark 14:50, And they all forsook him, and fled. Later, Peter would deny Him three times. As much as one may believe they will stand faithful in their time of testing, in reality until the testing comes, they do not know for sure.
The arrogance of pride has ensnared many a bold person. Be careful and pray for faithfulness. After all, it’s good from time to time to ask the Lord; Is it I?
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
