Daily Reading: Mark 4-5

Mark 4:40

And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

In verse 35 of Mark 4 the Lord said to His men, Let us pass over unto the other side. He was speaking about crossing the Sea of Galilee. While crossing this body of water, the Lord was asleep, and a great storm arose. So much so that these men, some of whom were commercial fishermen who were well adept at being on the water in a boat, even these seasoned sailors (if you will) were terrified. To a man they thought their lives would end on the sea that night. While they were troubled in heart they woke the Savior saying, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

Have you been there? In a situation that seemed hopeless, that it seemed all is lost, that it seemed like life as you know it is over, or even to the place of physical harm and inevitable death. While being in that situation you wonder…Lord, carest thou not that I am perishing here? But did you perish? Did it turn out as bad as you thought? Did the results of the issue equal or surpass the fear it conjured up in your heart? Probably not, right? Right! Issues once realized are usually not as bad as the fear caused us to think.

So, what did Jesus say to these scared believers? How is it that ye have no faith? They were in the will of God. He said to them, Let us pass over unto the other side. That was His Word on the matter. They were going to pass over to the other side because He said they were going to pass over to the other side. But, yet, their eyes, their sight, their feelings, their insecurities, their rational thought process argued against His word in their minds.

Been there? Probably to one extent or another every believer has. We have His Word, but in the midst of the storms of life, with the emotions, the horror stories we’ve heard, the wild imagination only focusing on the worst outcome, His Word is pushed aside. What is the answer? Put yourself in the midst of His will for your life as much as possible and trust Him. Let the anxieties come, let the fears rage, let the storms roar, but in and through it all trust Him. But know this, if you step out of His protective will, that brings up a whole other can of worms. However, for today let’s leave it like this. But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. Hebrews 6:9

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
