Rēad to Read …Again

Daily Reading: Matthew 24-25

Matthew 25:25

And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

As you read today you have been introduced to three servants. One received five talents (an amount of money), invested those talents and gained five more. One received two, invested them and gained two more. One received one talent, hid it in the earth, maintained it, but gained none.

Those servants that gained through trading were promoted to be rulers and invited to enter into the joy of the Lord. The one who earned none was called wicked and slothful, his talent was taken from him, and he was ushered out of the presence of his master. What was his error?

Through fear he hid his talent in the earth. He was afraid of losing the one talent.  He didn’t waste it on riotous living, he didn’t lose it through carelessness, he just didn’t invest it. He hid it in the earth. He had a fear of failure, so he did nothing with his talent.

He may have been very successful in his own right. In his determination, learning or strong work ethic, he on his own, with that which he gained on his own, may have been very successful. He may have been very poor. The master deemed him to be wicked and slothful; neither of these lend themselves to great success. Frankly at the end, when the master reviewed his use of the talent given him, it didn’t matter if he were personally successful or suffered great poverty. What mattered was that he had no increase of his talent to give to his master.

There was a man in church, a simple man, a man of diminished mental capabilities. Yet, he continually tried to lead someone to Christ. He may never have led one soul to the Lord, but he tried. There are pastors trying their best, they are praying, working, studying, living clean lives yet, only pastor a handful of souls never increasing very much. They are trying. They have not put their “talent” in the ground for safekeeping, they are out there on the front lines attempting to gain and increase for their Lord.

On and on the list could go. Trying to invest your talent and failing is not putting your talent in a hole in the earth. It is overstepping fear, forging ahead, and attempting to make a difference. It is sometimes stepping out of the so-called “comfort zone” and taking a risk. So, preach the message, hand out the tract, boldly say the prayer of intercession, attend the church services, give a tithe and offering, perform your alms, and keep on doing so for through these, and so many other dozens of ways, one is making investments of the talent/s God has given. The only way to fail in the investment of the talents received is to not invest them.
