Daily Reading: Matthew 24-25
And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Matthew chapter 24 has intrigued readers for over 2,000 years. In this chapter, the Lord gives an overview of the signs of His coming and the end of the world. Of all the signs and events that will take place before the very end, one is especially disturbing.
Frankly, there is not one individual that can affect this notion of nation against nation, or kingdom against kingdom. Nor can an individual affect natural disasters like famines, pestilences, earthquakes. Neither can a single individual stop this thing of persecution and hatred in society. But, beginning at verse 10, the Lord brings some individual issues to the forefront. Being offended, betraying one another, hating one another, being led astray by false teachers; these are personal concerns. Likewise, His statement in verse 12 is highly personal: And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
This can be changed, this can be stopped, this can be ended. This thing of allowing one’s love to grow cold does not have to happen. Notice, the Lord does not specify the object of the love. For example, the verse does not say, “The love of many toward the Lord shall wax cold.” It is open ended. The love of many shall wax cold. Love toward another, love of a spouse, love of children, love of parents, love of good friends, love of one’s church, life in general, toward the underprivileged, the prisoners, the sick and the lonely, and yes one’s love of and toward the Lord, His Word, and His way.
The old song says, “What the world needs now, is love sweet love, that’s the only thing there’s just too little of.” Before the songwriter penned those words, the Bible proclaimed this truth two millennia earlier. In fact, the first two and great commands according to Jesus are to love the Lord thy God and love thy neighbor as thyself (Matthew 22:37-40). Yet, the love of many shall wax cold.
This is a sign of the end of the age, don’t let this prophecy be your reality. How? The key to unlocking how to maintain one’s love is found in the verse: And because iniquity shall abound. Stay away from iniquity, do not bargain with it, entertain it, allow it, or participate in it. Keep it far away, as Zophar said in the book of Job, If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles. (Job 11:14). Since the beginning of time until now, iniquity has stifled love. Put away iniquity’s influence and love will once again abound. This is something that each and every person must choose to do, and then do it. Choose to love.
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today which is your choice.
