Daily Reading: Matthew 22-23

Matthew 23:37

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Personal responsibility is something many would rather not look at. However sooner or later, on earth or in Heaven every person will come face to face with the results of their decisions. In today’s verse the Lord is passionately relating to Jerusalem that He has done all He could do to bring them under His protection; but they would not. They chose not to gather under his wings. They would not.

In fact, probably many of their number became offended because he likened them to chickens. He was using a word picture that is as moving as it is poignant. He wanted to protect them, He loved Jerusalem. In fact, earlier in Matthew 5:35 He said of Jerusalem: for it is the city of the great King. By the way, He is the great King! This is how much Jerusalem, and the people in it, meant to Him.

But they would not. He did that which He should do, and they should have done that which they should have done, which was to come unto Him by faith. It was their personal responsibility to come to Him, as He first came to them. After all, We love him, because he first loved us. (I John 4:19)

Come what may, when life is over personal responsibility will come into account. For the lost at the Great White Throne Judgment, for the saved at the Judgment Seat of Christ. God created humans to be a free agent, to coin a phrase. It is within their power of self to choose that which they will believe, that which they will do, and that which they will become. No, you cannot choose to become 6’5” if you are only 5’5” tall, but you can choose to gather under Jesus’ protective wings. It is your choice to make. Even as it was Jerusalem’s choice to make. They chose poorly.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today which is your choice.
