Daily Reading: Romans 8-10

Romans 10:17

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Many thousands would like to increase their faith. In Luke 17 the disciples had the desire that their faith be increased. When the disciples heard the Lord say: Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him (Luke 17:3-4), they asked Him to increase their faith. You see, the Word of God that the Lord gave caused the disciples to realize how far they were from being able to obey it. After all, many have difficulty in forgiving someone who does one thing wrong toward them, much less if that person trespasses against them seven times in one day. Imagine. I forgive you; I forgive you; I forgive you; I forgive you; I forgive you; I forgive you; I forgive you. Seven times…and meaning it every time.

So, you are reading this, and the Holy Ghost brings to your mind the need to forgive someone their trespass. By hearing (by reading it) God’s Word you are motivated to keep it; that is faith. Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

To increase faith, increase the hearing of the Word of God. Not only with physical ears for there are many who have ears to hear but hear not. But hear the Word of God with spiritual ears. As Jesus said: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear (Mark 4:9). There are multitudes of ways to hear the Word of God. Listening to a preacher preach, in a Sunday School class, in a song, hymn, or spiritual song, through the Holy Ghost bringing a Scripture to the mind, by reading the Bible, listening to the Bible being read, even in seeing the Bible in action through the good acts of other believers. For it is a true statement altogether that a person’s faith is in direct proportion to their hearing the Word of God.

But alas, many will not hear, therefore they will be of no faith, or little faith on the earth. Just like Israel’s story is given to us as a warning, a cautionary tale, and a lesson in disbelief. After all, just four verses later the Holy Spirit included this in Romans 10. But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people. He spoke to them; they did not hear (most of them) therefore they had no faith. He reached out His hands to them, but they would not hear. Please do not let their failure become your reality.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
