Daily Reading: I Chronicles 12-14
I Chronicles 12:8 And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;
The Gadites were fit for the battle. Their purpose: to make David king. Today followers of Jesus Christ are to be fit for the battle as well. Our aim: to make Christ King. Of the fact that we are to be fit for the battle the New Testament has ample evidence.
II Timothy 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
II Timothy 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
I Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
Ours is a spiritual battle, one for which we must make ourselves fit. Therefore is the purpose of discipleship, study, attending preaching services, personal prayer, devotions, singing the songs of our team, and learning to keep rank in our regiment. It has been said by people smarter and better than me that "The Christian Army is the only army in the world that marches on its knees." True, absolutely true.
The Gadites chose to become fit for the battle before the battle was raging. Too often the soldiers of Christ take their ease in peacetime, failing to make themselves fit for the battle. Then, when the battle commences in earnest they try to become fit, but while practicing their faith in the battle they find that the enemy is expertly outmaneuvering them being well practiced and more fit for the battle. The time to fit oneself for the battle is when there is no battle. Oh, be not mistaken, every day is a battle for the Christian, but at times the battles of the day are like peacetime when compared to the all-out war battles that come upon all from time to time.
To be fit for your battle, choose to become fit, do all you can to be fit, then stand sentinel waiting for the battle, always maintaining your one purpose; to make Christ King of everything. In parting a challenge from the powerful book of Proverbs. If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. (24:10) Choose today to become and be fit for the battle.
Until tomorrow, be fit for the battle of making Christ King today.
