Rēad to Read …Again
Daily Reading: Nehemiah 8-9
Nehemiah 9:6
Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
The Bible has a way to give repetitive overviews of God’s great works at the most opportune places. The Levites on this certain day in Jerusalem stood on stairs (to a raised platform) to review the entire history of the Old Testament up to that point. Consider all that the Levites reminded His people that He performed on their behalf.
He made the world, the heavens, and the heaven of heavens, vs. 6. Most do not believe this truth today, but it is found throughout the entire Bible. Even unto the last book of the Bible this is reported. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (Revelation 4:11)
He chose Abram, caused him to leave the Ur of the Chaldees and changed his name to Abraham. He also promised that Abraham’s seed would inherit the promise land, vs. 7-8.
He saw the affliction of His people in Egypt and brought them out of that horrible situation with a strong hand. He showed His signs and wonders to Pharaoh, his servants, and all the people of Egypt, vs. 9-10.
The Lord brought them over the Red Sea in a miraculous fashion, unlike anything the world has ever seen, vs. 11.
He led His people by the cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, vs. 12.
He came down from Mount Sinai and gave them His precepts, statutes, and laws through Moses, vs. 13.
God also gave the Hebrews bread from heaven, water from a rock, and reminded them of His promise that they would possess the land He promised to Abraham, vs. 15.
Even though the people sinned greatly against Him, He heaped upon them mercies, and forsook them not, vs. 16-19.
Forty years He sustained them in their wilderness wanderings that they lacked for nothing, vs. 20-21, although many tried to make them believe they were “missing out.”
And He gave them the promise land, vs. 22-25, part of which was Jerusalem.
This is a wonderful, condensed record of the Old Testament works of God performed by Him unto His chosen people. Through the Bible there will be many overviews such as this one, keep an eye out for them. They serve to remind us of the great God and all that He has done, and is doing on behalf of His born-again children.
