Daily Reading: Nehemiah 7

Nehemiah 7:65

And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.

The Urim and Thummim has been a topic of discussion for Bible scholars throughout the centuries. Quite frankly, no one knows exactly what they are, but there are some things we know.

The Israelites knew what they were.

They were used to obtain the will and direction of the Lord.

They were put into the breastplate.

The words signify Light and Perfection.

Today the Urim and Thummim are not needed. Today we learn the will and direction of God through the Word of God. It is light. It is perfection. In it are laws, commands, principles, precepts, teachings, illustrations, word pictures, standards, and so much more. These all instruct, lead, guide and direct God's children into His will and give them His direction. If a person, any person wants to have God's leadership in a matter, search the Scriptures, continue on until He reveals His will and direction. The Scriptures, coupled with prayer, framed in faith, webbed together with the influence of the Holy Ghost will lead anyone into His perfect will and divine direction.

Remember, the reason that those in the Old Testament needed things like the Urim and Thummim, and the casting of lots, even "putting out fleece", and human men called prophets that spoke God's Word, is that they did not have the complete written Word of God, nor did they have the indwelling of the Spirit of God. Since the day of Pentecost wherein the Holy Spirit filled the believers in Jesus Christ, and now that we have the complete written Word of God, His will and direction can be obtained through them.

Today's verse is the last mention of the Urim and Thummim in Scripture. So, let us subscribe to the long-standing rule of Biblical teaching and let silent things be silent. If you want to know God's will on a matter, search the Scriptures and pray in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
