Daily Reading: II Chronicles 35-36

II Chronicles 36:16

But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

Before His judgment falls, God always gives fair and ample warning. He did to Adam and Eve, He warned them that they would die if they ate of the forbidden food, yet they did not believe Him. He warned Pharaoh before that dreaded night of the first Passover. When the death angel smote all the firstborn of Egypt yet passed over the firstborn of Israel. He warned Israel. He sent prophets and messengers, yet Israel misused them and mocked them until there was no remedy left. Sooner or later, God ends warning and begins judging. Israel would go into captivity.

Through Christ the world has been warned. Through His pastors His flock has been warned. Through His indwelling Spirit His children of the New Testament age have been warned. Through His Apostles, which wrote most of the New Testament, His people have been warned. Through signs and wonders in nature and society all have been warned. Through fulfilled prophecies which can clearly be seen if one desires to see them, we have been warned. Through the beginnings of concepts, technology, ideological skirmishes, wars and rumors of wars, the warning goes forth.

How long until there is no remedy? No one knows. But one thing we know. One fact that can be seen in the life of Israel as we have just read it. God sends ample warning, but when He begins to make an end, He makes an end. The only thing sound judgment can conclude is that it is best to heed His warnings; turn to Him in humility and obedience to His gospel, for this is the only way to stave off His judgment against sin. Israel failed to heed His warning. May we be more ready.

Israel is in bondage, the balance of the Old Testament reveals much about the bondage, and the release of God's people to a newfound freedom, the post exilic era. But make no doubt, Israel as a nation will not ascend to its once lofty world status. Not in the Old Testament story. One day they will, but that is a lesson for another day. Until then learn this, heed God's warnings for in doing so His judgment may be put aside for a time. Sooner or later there will be a generation that just like Israel will mock His messengers and mistreat His prophets until there is no remedy left except God's heavy hand of judgment. May we not be that generation.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
