Daily Reading: II Chronicles 25-27

II Chronicles 25:9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.

Amaziah was the ninth king of Judah. He started off all right, but the Bible says that his heart was not perfect (25:2). That imperfection brought horrendous results in this king's life. Spoiler alert...he was killed in a conspiracy against him. His is a sad story.

He had an army of 300,000 choice men plus their leaders, the captains over thousands and the captains over hundreds. Yet, he did not think that was enough, as a result he hired 100,000 brave men of Israel. He did not pray about this. He did not get counsel about it. He did not ask the priests, or any prophet (not according to Scripture). He just did this. As a result a man of God came to King Amaziah and told him not to let the men of Israel go to the battle. It was not of God. This resulted in the king asking the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? The man of God tried to assuage this loss by giving the king a great promise: the Lord is able to give thee much more than this. Which probably happened in that Amaziah and his army won a great victory against the children of Seir, no doubt winning many spoils in the battle.

His story continues, and on a downward trajectory. The balance of the chapter deals with this. But herein is the lesson, when we make decisions without prayer, consultation of wise individuals, or the Word of God, losses will be incurred. I've done this so many times it hurts to think about them.

Once I joined a local country club. This was many years ago before I was in ministry. I paid my initiation fees, began paying my dues and began my journey as a member of this club. For about a month. Then I resigned. I lost the upfront dues I paid, I lost the initiation fee, and I lost some other ancillary expenses, thousands of dollars. All because I did not pray about it, did not consult the Bible, and did not ask others the right questions. The reasons are not important, suffice it to say, it simply was not God's will for me at the time. Not long after He called me to preach.

I lost money, but I've never really missed it. You see, the Lord is able to give thee much more than this. If you know God is leading you as He did Amaziah, as He did me about the country club, follow Him. Don't count the cost. For whatever the cost...the Lord is able to give thee much more than this.

Until tomorrow, obey His leadership today, no matter the cost.
