Daily Reading: Deuteronomy 24-27

Deuteronomy 27:26

Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen.

Chapter 27 of the book of Deuteronomy begins the last message of Moses to the nation of Israel. In it there is a golden nugget for us today. It is found in the word amen, or rather how the word is to be used by a congregation.

The basic thing we must understand today is what the word amen means. Many probably think it is just a word we use to end a prayer. It is much more than that. It means "so be it". It is used to vocalize agreement or assent. At the end of a prayer, it means that the person praying is saying to God, "So be it according to that which has been asked or discussed." Saying amen out loud while the preacher is preaching is basically saying; "I agree with that." Some have said it like this: "Saying amen during a sermon where the preacher can hear it is like saying 'sic ‘em' to a bulldog."

Twelve times in Chapter 27 the congregation is told by Moses; And all the people shall say, Amen. So, the next time your preacher says, "Let me hear an Amen to that." He is being Biblical. He is teaching you when and to what you should say "so be it" by only using one word. Amen!

After all, if you agree with that which is being preached or taught, why not let everyone know it. Amen? Amen!

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
