Daily Reading: I Samuel 13-14

1 Samuel 14:8-10 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them. If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them. But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.

As the Apostle Paul would say, Jonathan was in a strait betwixt two. There was a sharp rock on one side of him, a sharp rock on the other side of him, the enemy in front of him, and retreat behind him. His nation was in a bad way, the enemy army, the Philistines, was armed ready for battle. However, only Saul (the King of Israel) and Jonathan (his son) had swords. Being a man of bravery and courage Jonathan decided to take the battle to the enemy. All he had was a sword and his faithful armor bearer.

In this strait betwixt two, Jonathan did not know what to do. So he prayed. That is always a good thing to do, anytime. Especially when you do not know what to do. Jonathan was in a place that he had to have the Lord's leadership. What to do? To find out he put two options before the Lord. He would make himself known to the enemy. If they said, "Come up unto us" that would be a sign that the Lord would be with them in battle, making them victorious. If they said, "Tarry until we come to you" that would be a sign that they should stand in their place and not move. Notice, there was no option to retreat!

He made himself and his armor bearer known to them; the enemy said, "Come up unto us"; they did, and they won a great victory for their nation that day. All because they knew without a shadow of doubt that God led them in the way they should go. This true-life event is a living illustration of Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

He did for Jonathan in his day, and He will for you in your day! Just pray, give God the options, make a plan to receive His answer, and obey. Simple right? Simple to type, simple to say, simple to tell others, but not so simple to do. But do we must. Because sometimes we are in a strait betwixt two.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
