Daily Reading: I Samuel 4-8

1 Samuel 8:19-20 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

Conform or transform? Every person will face this decision at one time or another. Israel did. They decided to conform. They wanted to be like every other nation. They wanted a King. They wanted him to fight for them and be their sovereign leader. There was a time when the Lord God was the undisputed leader of this nation. Now though, they desire to be like the other nations of the world. Samuel was their current leader; he did a great job of leading the nation. I Samuel 7:13-14 testify to this fact.

So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

Yet, the people of Israel wanted a king. The Lord told Samuel to give them their heart's desire, but to protest solemnly to them of the nature of their future king (8:7-18). Israel did not reject Samuel they rejected the Lord. They wanted to conform to that which the world did.

Evidently this is an ongoing problem with God's people. So much so that the Lord inspired the Apostle Paul to command this in his letter to the Roman believers. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2). This is the standing order for our day. We are not to conform but rather to transform. How? Renewing our mind, proving the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. For the will of God is not the will of the world.

Again, conform or transform. The choice is ours.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
