Daily Reading: Judges 19-21

Judges 19:1

And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.

No king means more than no king. It means that this nation had no leadership, none. Not a human king and certainly not a Heavenly King. In a book that started with Israel asking the Lord for guidance, it ends with this statement: In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. The results are devastating. The last three chapters of Judges should bring a tear to the eye of everyone who loves God's people. They have fallen so low that vice and violence are rampant.

When it was asked in Judges 19:30 ...consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds. Where were the Moses's, the Joshua's, the Caleb's of that day? Where were the priests that were supposed to speak for God? Where were those that knew the law of God and hoped to live by it and tell others of it? Where were the prayer meetings? Where was the scroll that contained the whole of the law of God? Where? Nowhere to be found, not in the day when there was no king in Israel.

If a world would desire to see what it would be like without God or His chosen leaders, no greater example could be given than the end of the book of Judges. Unimaginable dastardly deeds leading to a civil war where many thousands die. All because there was no king, no leadership. God's people should have known better. They should have searched out the unseen leader, the unseen King, the King whose throne is in Heaven and whose footstool is the earth.

May we be wise enough to take notice and learn.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
