Daily Reading: Judges 16-18

Judges 17:6

In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Get ready for a startling statement. Not everything in the Bible is true. There are numerous statements in the Bible that are true in that they were spoken, but not true in that the statements were not true. Consider Satan's statement to the Lord about Job. ...Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. This statement is true in that it was spoken, but it is not a true statement. Not at least in Job's case.

Today's verse is one such statement. It is true that every man did that which was right in their own eyes. But it is not true that that which they did was right. Judges 16-18 is filled with statements of fact, true they happened, but they are not right nor truthful. Think about 17:3, Micah's mother said that the 1,100 shekels of silver that her son stole and then returned, was wholly dedicated to the Lord to make a graven image. Yet, in the very next verse the Bible tells us that she only used 200 shekels of silver for the graven image. What happened to the other 900 shekels? Yet, not only that...what was she doing making a graven image that according to the Law as given to Moses was prohibited in no uncertain terms (Exodus 20:4).

From idol worship to priests for hire, to forsaking temple worship, to lack of prayer, to a total ignorance and nonconformity to the Law of God, Israel slipped into a horrible condition. While they still talked of the Lord God and even used wonderful salutations such as "Go in peace", they knew nothing of, or simply ignored the clear teachings of the Law. Such are many today.

While reading and studying the Word of God be careful to rightly divide the Word of Truth (II Timothy 2:15). This is why reading the entire Bible is important, it is its own check and balance. In it is truth, all that is recorded in it is true in that it happened or was said, but not all of that which happened or was said is truth. Knowing the difference is the best defense against false doctrine and spiritual error.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
