Daily Reading: Psalm 78-79

Psalm 78:4

We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

In this Psalm those in the nation of Israel pledge to…not hide them from their children. The them is the dark sayings of old, the praises of the LORD, His strength, and his wonderful works…. They wanted their children to know the Lord and understand all that He performed on behalf of their nation.

Every parent that knows Christ and His Father is to consider how to show their children the same. Parents are the most influential people in a child’s life. The primary responsibility for this thing of showing the next generation all that God can, and will, do for them is fathers. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). Moms play a huge part in this as pictured by Eunice, Timothy’s mother. When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. Lois passed her faith to Eunice , and Eunice passed it to Timothy. This is the way it is to be. Parents passing down to their children a heritage of faith through showing them all that the Lord God has performed.

Why? Why should parents be open with their children about the things of the Lord? The answer is found just three verses down from the one at the beginning of this devotion. Psalm 78:7-8 states: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

Parents do all you can to not hide from your children the mighty and wonderful works of God. Commit yourselves to that task. Daily devotions in the home will help, church participation will help, family prayer time will help, and reading the Bible together will help. These all start with the willing determination for parents to show to their children the wonderful works of God.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
