Rēad to Read …Again

Daily Reading: Psalm 74-77

Psalm 75:6-7

For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

This truth is seen throughout the Bible. God puts down and God sets up. That is His domain, that is His privilege. Yet, its foundation is the person. Consider the first and second king of Israel. Saul was the first, God set him up, but due to his continual disobedience God put him down and set up David. David was a man after God’s own heart. Later God rent the kingdom from David and gave it to Jeroboam (I Kings 14:8). On and on the illustrations could continue.

All that were “put down” were so because of some aspect of their life that God disapproved of which caused them to be unsuitable for continued or prolonged promotion. All that were “set up” were so because of some aspect of their life that God approved of causing them to be suitable for continued and prolonged promotion.

This thing of being put down or set up is relative. Think about a church. Some would think that the pastor of the large, growing, and financially well-off church is the one that God has set up. Likewise, the pastor of a small, stagnant church that struggles financially is usually seen as one that is put down. Nothing could be further from the truth. Very often the opposite is true. In the Bible the type of church is more important than the size of a church. It could be that the small church pastor is being promoted, sustained, and blessed more than the big church pastor. Although with God there are not small churches and big churches, there are faithful or unfaithful churches.

The Bible is true. God sets up some and puts down some. Can a person that is put down change things so that God would set them up? Yes, a thousand times yes. Remember Peter? Jesus put him down several times. One time the Lord even called him Satan (Luke 4:8), but on the day of Pentecost Peter was set up, he was promoted in the eyes of the people of Jerusalem. God so promoted Peter that in Acts 5:15 we read that his mere shadow seemed to have some healing power.

In Daniel 3:30 it is written, Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon. Why? Because God promoted them in the fiery furnace. God was with them, the king saw it, and the king promoted both them and their God. To the human eye, these three men were put down by being condemned to death in the furnace, but God was using that event to promote them in the future. This is why human rationale must be kept in check in regard to the promotion or the putting down of anyone, anywhere, and at any time.

Paul was killed in Rome, had his head cut off like a heinous criminal. To the natural mind of things, he was put down. Yet, that death was a promotion for Him. So too with Christ, His cross, His grave, His resurrection, and so too with all who trust in Him for salvation. Proof? I Corinthians 6:14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power. Now, that is the best promotion of any kind, of which this writer can think. Being raised with Him is better than money, position, power, or popularity. Many may not think it now, but then when it happens, they will experience true promotion of the finest kind.
