Rēad to Read …Again

Daily Reading: Psalm 36-39

Psalm 37:9

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.

Some inherit great wealth. Some will inherit the earth. Given the choice which would you desire? Wealth may last a lifetime, the earth is eternal. Yes, this earth will be destroyed, but God will create a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness (II Peter 3:13). Again, which would you choose? Transient riches or earth as an inheritance. The word inheritance is used merely as a tool to describe that the Lord will give something, like a loving parent who gives their wealth to their children. In Psalm 37, those that will inherit the earth are described in detail.

Verse 9           …those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.

Verse 11         …the meek shall inherit the earth

Verse 18         …the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.

Verse 22         …such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth

Verse 29         The righteous shall inherit the land

Verse 34         Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land…

Verse 3          (while this verse does not use the word “inherit,” it teaches it) Trust in the Lord, and

do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

To inherit the earth, the land, one must:

                              Wait upon the Lord

                              Be meek

                              Be upright

                              Be blessed of Him

                              Be righteous

                              Keep His way

                              Trust in Him

                              Do good

Few fit that description, but for those who do…what an inheritance they have coming.

Jesus spoke perhaps the most famous words about this thing of inheriting the earth during His sermon on the mount (Matthew 5-7). He said in 5:5 Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.

Many differ on the interpretation of the nature of this inheritance. But one thing is certain, it is far better than meager fleeting wealth. It is something lasting, now and evidently forever. John even saw a new earth, And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away, and there was no more sea. Revelation 21:1 For all those adventurers out there that would have liked to walk on the pristine earth before it was polluted by mankind, just think about walking on the new earth, knowing it is part of your inheritance. Oh, yes, the earth is only part of all that God will give to His children of faith, whose lives are characterized by His characteristics as listed above. Paul knew this, for he wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. (Romans 8:17) Whatever Christ inherits, His children inherit. Wow!

What a wonderful inheritance His children can enjoy now, and forever. This is why David started this Psalm with these words. Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. (vs. 1-3) Today there is a lot of fretting going on because of evildoers. Just remember their end and rejoice in your promises from your Loving Father in Heaven.
