Minding Your Thoughts
A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
God is revealing to His people the thoughts that He thinks toward them. Think about that. God has thoughts that he thinks about. Each of us have thoughts, but do we properly think about them? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Thinking about our thoughts is a very beneficial attribute. Why do I have this thought? What should I do about this thought? Where will my thoughts lead me? Does this thought glorify God? Is this thought in God’s will for my life? There are thousands of things to think about concerning one’s thoughts.
Many times, I have done, or said, something that I regret. Almost invariably I think (too late I might add) I wish I had thought about that before I did it or said it. Thinking about our thoughts before those thoughts become actions may save us much embarrassment.
One time I wrote a business letter to a customer basically telling the customer that they were wrong and that they needed to own up to their mistake and quit whining. We lost that customer and my boss was more than a little agitated. When he saw that letter, he really let me have it. He then gave me some advice that I have followed for over forty years that has never failed me. He said that every single letter I write I should let it sit on my desk for at least twenty-four hours before I mail it, then just before I put it in the envelope I should read it one last time. Many times, I have read those letters and never mailed them. My old boss taught me to think about my thoughts before allowing them to be put into action. He saved me much trouble throughout the years with this simple piece of advice.
God put in some time to think about His thoughts toward His people. You too can think on your thoughts, this small act of minding your thoughts may save a customer, or a relationship, or your testimony, or embarrassment, or regret, or the need for repentance, or… well the list could go on and on.
May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
