Daily Reading: Isaiah 5-8
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah is a book about the coming Christ. In Isaiah 7:14 the prophet foretells of the virgin birth of the one called Immanuel. This prophecy about the Lord Jesus was fulfilled in the book of Matthew. Remember, the angel said to Joseph: Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. In Matthew 1:23, the angel quoted Isaiah and also added something else. He added the interpretation of the word Immanuel which is God with us.
What would be the sign of this One called Immanuel? A virgin birth. Such was unheard of in the time of Christ, but it happened. Scripture proves it, history records it, and believers believe it. This is one of the great teachings of the Christian faith. That God would come to earth robed in flesh, in the form of a servant is an amazing statement, and even more amazing is the truth of reality.
Around 700 years before Christ was born, Isaiah proclaimed that it would happen. This is the wonderful book of Isaiah. When the apostles declared Jesus as the Messiah, as they reasoned with the Jews out of the Scriptures that Jesus of Nazareth was indeed the Christ, they certainly used Isaiah’s prophecies. The same prophecies we have the privilege to read this year during the Read-to-Read program. Amen!
Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
