Daily Reading: Psalm 96-102

Psalm 96:13

Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

Righteousness and truth; the ultimate one two punch. The dynamic duo. Two birds of a feather. Two that are as much separate as they are also one. Truth and righteousness. By these, with these, the LORD will judge.

Much of the population of the world live in countries wherein they have various rights to appeal wrong judgments. Think about the US. A person takes a case to court, loses, appeals to a higher court, loses, appeals to higher courts until the case is taken up by the Supreme Court. That court may rule in favor of the case or against it. Whichever decision is made, the judgment of this court is final. That is until they reword the case or somehow frame it in another manner and start the process all over again. We are accustomed to the process of appeal.

Taking it further. If there are laws which we don’t like, we change them. Yes, this is an exceedingly difficult thing to do, but it is done all the time. Man-made laws change with time, circumstance, and the desire of the people. So, we become conditioned to think, if judgment does not go my way I can appeal, or perhaps can lobby for the law to be changed. Of course, these are vast general statements and may oversimplify extraordinarily complex issues and processes, but have no doubt, appeals and changes of laws happen constantly. Society at large has grown to depend upon these rights.

But then God enters. Of His judgment there is no appeal. None of His laws will be altered to any degree. Herein many become uncomfortable. As a pastor, I can attest that God’s standards of righteousness and truth are continually challenged. Constant is the cry to change, back off, let loose, conform, and otherwise capitulate to the whims of the people of society. A church may, a pastor may, individual believers may, these all may yield to pressure thereby lessening God’s holy tenets of righteousness and truth. But God never does. He does not change; He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

In the coming Day of God’s judgment of individuals and nations, which position would you choose: change God’s righteousness and truth to fit society, or change society to agree to God’s righteousness and truth?

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
