Daily Reading: Proverbs 19-21

Proverbs 21:31

The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

Perhaps you have heard the old saying, “Work as if it is all up to you, pray as if it is all up to God.” This verse highlights this philosophy.

The horse is prepared against the day of battle… Every warrior prepares for the battle. Let’s face this fact; battles are horrible, someone will be hurt, someone will win, and someone will lose, for this is the common outcome of battles. As much as society in general may desire no battles, there are battles, nonetheless. Since there will be battles, warriors must prepare. Before tanks, Humvees, helicopters, ships, and planes, warriors were carried into battle on horses. The horse had to be prepared, trained if you will to respond properly in the battle. Yes, indeed, a warrior’s life could hang on the balance of how well trained their horse was.

but safety is of the LORD. No matter how well prepared the horse, no matter how many spears, arrows, bombs, guns, or even superior numbers or tactics; true safety is of the Lord. He may use the horse, the armaments, the strategies, and the warrior’s ability, but when it comes right down to it, safety is of the Lord. Within the pages of God’s Word there are ample verses about the manner in which to obtain the safety of the Lord God. In short, look at it this way, obedience to His Word is an umbrella (see Psalm 91). In the day of trouble this umbrella protects the one in obedience by deflecting the enemy’s best assaults. All the warrior has to do is stay under the protection of the umbrella’s coverage.

If a battle is on your horizon, prepare your horse, obey Bible teachings to the letter, and safety will be assured. Even if the warrior falls in battle, the Lord has prepared a safe haven; it is called heaven.

Once again: “Work as if it is all up to you: pray as if it is all up to God.”

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
