Daily Reading: Proverbs 13-15

Proverbs 13:7

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

The Word of God is a book of contrasts, some would say contradictions. Not contradictions in that it contradicts itself in error, but rather contradictions of actions that most would consider to be backward. Take today’s verse for example. In it there are the rich that have nothing, and the poor that have great riches. Let’s face it, this verse flies in the face of all that is commonly held as norms of society today.

Think about it; does society promote those who make themselves poor? Does it warn against those who make themselves rich? Generally not, but here the one who makes themselves poor are uplifted as examples to follow, whereas those who make themselves rich are, at the minimum, warned.

Yes, throughout the Bible the life of a child of God is full of contrasts. We are taught to humble ourselves to be promoted, to give in order to receive, to die to self so that we may truly live, to love our enemies instead of hating them, to do good to those who use us, to not be troubled in the face of the coming end time trouble, and on and on the list goes. Yes, the Christian existence is not in line with the way we naturally think. This is why it is so spiritually challenging.

As a hobby I play golf. The thing about golf is that it is a great challenge. It can never be won; it can only be played and hopefully improved. After all, a perfect score would be 18, right! The same is true with the life of a true Bible believer. We will never obtain perfection, but we must continue to play, trying to improve every day.

If any person desires great riches, both in this world and eternity, make yourself poor so that you might have great riches. May the Lord give to each the wisdom of what that means for them.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
