The Year of our Lord, Jesus Christ

Luke 2:49

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

These are the first recorded words of the Lord Jesus in the Word of God. He was speaking to His earthly parents. Mary of course being His mother, Joseph His stepfather. After being in Jerusalem to worship, the Lord’s family was returning home. One day into that journey they realized that Jesus was missing, thereupon returning to Jerusalem they found Him. He was in the Temple with the learned leaders of the Jewish religion. He was there, hearing them and asking them questions.

Once found, Mary asked Him: Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. (Luke 2:48) To which He answered How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? Right then and there, this 12-year-old Son of God stated His life business. His business was to be about His Father’s business. Not the business of carpentry as Joseph’s was, but the business of His true Father, the Heavenly Father.

Every businessperson could learn much from Christ concerning being about their business. He worked, suffered, worked, prayed, worked, dealt with conflicts of all types, worked, taught, worked, preached, worked, worked, and worked some more. He kept His mind on His work, His hands busy with the work, His eyes filled with the work. He worked while others slept, He worked when others quit, He worked when hungry, thirsty, tired, and falsely accused. He simply worked. He had a business; it was His Father’s business. That business can be summed up in one word. Souls.

He trained others to expand His business and today, over 2,000 years later His business is still going strong. As Jesus committed to be about His Father’s business, so too have faithful individuals committed to do the same. Think about it like this. In the introductory statement of the Book of Acts, Luke (it’s writer) stated this; The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Jesus began to do and teach, that was His Father’s business. Today that which He began continues. Yes, it does! Through the lives of His devoted, faithful, workers. Workers like you and me.

As the first Words of Jesus would set the tone for His life business, let each that calls Him “Lord” do the same. Let each one be busy about the Father’s business.

Until tomorrow,
