Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Ezekiel 23:17 And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them

Over the next five days, the verses (all in the same chapter) deal with the same basic subject which is alienation of the mind.  Each day a different aspect of this important topic will be discussed.  No doubt this will be new teaching for some, so let’s begin together so we may truly understand one of the most obscure, yet real life, teachings in the Bible about our minds.  Today, we will look at the contextual setting of the verses as a foundation to understand the horribleness of the sins of God’s chosen people.

The above noted chapter (Ezekiel 23) relates the story of two sisters.  In reality this story is about Samaria and Jerusalem, two cities with much in common, as sisters would have much in common.  These two capital cities, indicating the leadership of both nations, fell into horrible idolatry.  Samaria was the capital city of the Northern Kingdom, Israel.  This kingdom was made up of ten of the original twelve tribes of Israel.  Jerusalem was the capital city of the Southern Kingdom, Judah, which was comprised of the remaining two tribes (Judah and Benjamin).    The division of Israel into two nations took place in 935 BC after the death of Solomon.  As a footnote for the history buffs, Israel (the Northern Kingdom) went into captivity by the hands of the Assyrians in 722 BC, and Judah (the Southern Kingdom) fell into captivity by the hands of the Babylonian empire, led by Nebuchadnezzar through three deportations; 606, 597,586 BC.   This portion of Ezekiel’s prophecy took place around 591 BC, after the second deportation of Judah and before the third.  Therefore, this is not only a warning to Jerusalem, but also an explanation of why they are falling into captivity.

The above reference by Ezekiel was aimed at Jerusalem.  God states that this city, the beloved city of David, committed tremendous sins against God.  Those in the city departed from God by turning to false and vain manners of worship.  And not only wrong worship, but also a manner of living by those individual citizens of Judah which was totally inconsistent with the Law of God given through Moses.  Because of this, Babylon was allowed to overrun her, taking her captive, robbing her riches, and stealing her people.  As a consequence, Jerusalem’s mind was alienated from her captors.  Tomorrow we will see what it means to have an alienated mind, you may be astounded!

May the Lord Bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
