The Year of our Lord, Jesus Christ

Matthew 11:29

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

If there ever was a message needed today, this is it. Today’s verse is more than a message, it is an invitation. It is a gift. It is a promise. It is a comfort to a confused and hurting soul. For all who are carrying more than they can carry, confused beyond reason, hurting beyond measure, and any and all other burdens, this verse is a refuge. It’s a truth on which to hold, a future for which to live, a past to be forgotten, and a present promise that once poured into the injuries of life can heal the body, soul, and spirit.

Jesus spoke this promise. What a wonderful promise it is. But there is a catch. One thing that the one who craves rest for their souls must do. They must learn of Him. He invites any and all to take His yoke upon them, and to learn of Him. This idea of taking His yoke upon oneself could be debated from now until the end of time. But the statement “Learn of me” there is no ambiguity there.

However, in today’s secularized religious climate there seems to be less and less preaching and teaching of Christ. In an attempt to assist any and all who truly desire to “Learn of Him,” each week, Monday through Friday, of 2022 a short devotion about the Lord Jesus will be distributed. His prayers will be examined, His parables discussed, His teachings related, and His life observed. Together we will “Learn of Him” just as Isaiah said, precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little and there a little. We will “Learn of Him,” together. Wonderful!

Someone may ask, is there enough information in the Bible about Jesus to get 260 unique thoughts and devotions about Him, one for every day? On this thought consider the last verse in the last chapter of the Gospel of John. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen. (John 21:25) So, grab yourself a cup of coffee in one hand, the Bible in the other hand, and let’s spend a year together doing all we can to simply “Learn about Him.” By doing so, …ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Until Tomorrow,

William T. Howe, Ph.D.
