Daily Reading: Exodus 28-29

Exodus 28:2

And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.

Sunday go-to-meeting clothes. That is what they used to be called. These clothes were the best that a person owned. Perhaps the only time these clothes were worn is when the person attended church. Whatever happened to that? Perhaps a more important question is "Where did the habit come from?"

It came from various teachings in the Bible. Today we read of one such teaching. When the people of Israel were in the wilderness God gave them a work to do. They were to construct a tabernacle, a place that would become the center of their worship for the next forty years. Later a permanent Temple would be built. But due to their nomad existence during the wilderness wanderings the people needed a portable place to worship. When giving Moses the blueprints for the tabernacle, the instruments of worship, the various sacrifices of worship, and the clothing for the priests, God was incredibly detailed.

There was nothing casual about worship then. Every detail was spelled out by Almighty God. It had to be, for it was an earthly representation of a heavenly reality. Nothing was left to chance; all was planned in the mind of God. God gave the plan to Moses, then Moses gave the plan to the people and God gave the people the wisdom and ability to carry out the plan.

Consider the clothing for the priest. The priestly garments were said to be for both glory, beauty and were also a memorial (carrying the names of the names of the 12 patriarchs). Yet, another dimension of the garments was also apparent, it was modest, covering the priest's flesh so that their nakedness was protected. A signet on the priestly garment had engraved on it these words: HOLINESS TO THE LORD.

Yes, God was detailed in all aspects of worship during the wilderness wanderings and after that during the time of Temple worship. But what about today? Does God care about that which we wear to the worship services of our church? Yes, He does, for in the New Testament He discusses proper dress which is to be modest at its very core. The priestly garments told a story of God, His Holiness, beauty, and covenant. Today the believer’s garment also tells a story, but that is a story that will be highlighted when we get to the New Testament later this year.

Until tomorrow live for Christ today.
