Daily Reading: Exodus 7-9

Exodus 9:34

And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants.

"If God were to just show me a sign I'd believe." That is what more than one person has said. With that type of comment they are saying that God must prove Himself to them before they will believe Him. Of this, consider, the very first verse of the Bible states: In the Beginning God created the heaven and the earth. If God was not predisposed to prove Himself before claiming to create the heaven and earth why would He be predisposed to prove Himself to anyone? Additionally, if He did prove Himself to everyone who demands that He do so, they then would believe Him, not out of faith but out of proof.

God offers no proof of Himself. Neither should He. With that said, if anyone in the Bible had such a proof about the Lord God, it was Pharaoh. After all, up to this point in the story of the Exodus this ruler has seen the sign of the rod that became a serpent, the water turned to blood, the frogs invading the land, the dust turning into lice, the invasion of the flies, the murrain (mange) on all the Egyptian livestock, the boils, and the hail mixed with fire. But even though Pharaoh saw the strong hand of God move against he and his kingdom, Pharaoh did not believe in God's leadership and authority.

This ruler is like so many today. In the midst of God's dealing with them about their sinful actions many try to assuage His chastisement, but they don't really change their hearts, nor do they want to. They want carte blanche to sin without impunity.

Let us return to the point. Asking God to prove Himself before one will believe Him is like the rich man in Hell that asked Abraham to send someone from the dead to tell his five brothers not to come to that awful place of torment. He said in Luke 16:30, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. To which Abraham replied, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. How true this is.

For one did come back from the dead, Jesus Christ and yet still most don't believe.

But praise The Lord, some do believe without proof! They believe by faith. This is typified by Exodus 9:20-21: He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses: And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field. The ones who believed God moved with faith and protected their livestock, servants, and themselves. Those who did not believe God's Word lost them.

Pharaoh could have chosen to believe God thereby sparing his kingdom total destruction. But he hardened his heart and paid a dear price.

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
