Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Ezekiel 23:22 Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;

God states clearly in this chapter that His mind became alienated from Jerusalem because of her “doting” on other lovers. Namely these were the Egyptians, the Chaldeans, the Assyrians, the Babylonians and perhaps others. As a consequence of this idolatry God would rise up Jerusalem’s “lovers” against them. There is a lesson here to be received. Evidently a mind can be alienated from certain things, meaning it can be alienated from, let’s say, sin. Remember that the word alienate means to withdraw from, to be estranged from, to sever; this is what we should do about continual, habitual sin in our lives; alienate our mind from it.

It’s interesting that in the New Testament God uses this word “alienate” in relation with sin separating us from God. Ephesians 4:18 states: Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: This is the awful state of some today, they are alienated from a blessed life in this realm, and eternal life in the next all because of their ignorant blindness of heart. Their minds are alienated from God, His Ways, and especially His gospel.

This is why it is imperative that we give every person the gospel. By doing so, ignorance of God’s plan of salvation is removed. It gives a choice of that which to believe. For if the gospel is not given, ignorance of the gospel remains. The natural mind ignorant of the gospel. This may be where everyone starts, but no one has to stay in this place of alienation, for God has promised to reconcile any and all to Him through His Son. Colossians 1:21 speaks of this, And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled. The alienation of God’s mind toward Jerusalem will not last forever, likewise, His alienation toward a sinner is eliminated when that sinner comes to Him for salvation. Sin can be alienated from the mind with His help and supernatural power.

Because of this truth the old country preacher may say, “Praise the Lord and pass the biscuits!” That’s not Biblical, but it certainly paints a picture.

May the Lord Bless and be pleased with your thought life today,
