Daily Reading: Numbers 5-6

Numbers 6:24

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:

"Just sayin." This is a common phrase used today. It's meaning is clear, the speaker is saying that they are just saying something in passing without thought and ostensibly without meaning; yet it usually conveys a very pointed yet covert message. In Numbers 6:24-26 the Lord God conveys a truly clear statement that in and of itself may contain a covert message. The statement is this:

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:

The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

God gave this benediction to the priests to recite to the people, which they did, and do, even today. This blessing is enduring and powerful, not because priests and preachers say it, but because it is altogether sanctioned by Almighty God. It is His blessing, it has His authority behind it, it has His power enforcing it, it has His heart's desire fueling it, and it has Him as its benefactor. What better salutation or benediction could be spoken than the simple beauty found in these few words?

But there is something else. Something for the New Testament believer. Three times the word Lord, meaning Jehovah, is invoked. The first speaks of divine provision and protection, the second speaks of the face of God coupled with His grace, and the third speaks of God's countenance giving the hearer peace. Do you see it?

God the Father is the God of provision and peace.

God the Son is the face of God that brought grace into the world.

God the Holy Spirit is the continual countenance (shining) of God that brings peace.

Just sayin.

Oh, and by the way, notice the promise of God in verse 27; ...I will bless them. He didn't just say this, He does this!

Until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
