Daily Reading: I Peter 1-5

1 Peter 3:10

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

If there ever was a man who had to learn to control his tongue, it was Peter. It is not surprising then that the Lord would use this man to write the above verse. In this one simple verse Peter gives a secret of loving life and seeing good days. This secret has two parts: refrain the tongue from evil and refrain the lips from speaking guile. He learned this lesson and passes it on to all who would read the Bible.

But he doesn’t stop there. Notice that at the end of today’s verse there is not a period, but rather a colon. This means the subject continues on. Boy does it so! The next verse, verse 11, lists four additional things that this person who wills to love life and see good days will do. They are: eschew (stay away from or depart from) evil, do good, seek peace, and ensue (pursue) peace. These six things will keep anyone on the straight and narrow path of life. Guaranteed.

Peter knew that which he spoke of from his own practical life experience, the leadership of the Holy Ghost, and the personal teachings that Christ gave him. All would do well to take his advice to heart.

So, until tomorrow, live for Christ today.
